AB 1628: Child protection: safe surrender.
This bill, the Keeping Infants from Danger (Kid) Act, expands the scope of provisions related to safe surrender of minor children to include those who are 30 days old or younger. Currently, a parent or individual with lawful custody of a minor child 72 hours old or younger can voluntarily surrender physical custody to a safe surrender site without facing prosecution for child abandonment. The bill would impose new duties on local officials and requires reimbursement for certain costs mandated by the state.
