AB 89: Interscholastic sports: gender equity.
<p>This bill aims to promote gender equity in interscholastic sports by requiring the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) to amend its policies to prohibit a pupil whose sex was assigned male at birth from participating on a girls' interscholastic sports team.</p> <p>The CIF is a voluntary organization responsible for administering interscholastic athletic activities in secondary schools in California.</p> <p>The existing law requires the CIF to report on its goals and objectives regarding gender equity in interscholastic athletics, including the number of male and female pupils participating in sports.</p> <p>The bill seeks to ensure compliance with Title IX of the federal education amendments of 1972, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in educational programs or activities.</p>
