The bill aims to improve student eligibility for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) by expanding its coverage to include students enrolled in public institutions of higher education. Currently, students enrolled in college at least half-time are not eligible for SNAP benefits unless they meet specific exemptions. The bill would require the state department of social services and the student aid commission to develop a data-sharing agreement to identify, support, and link students to on- and off-campus basic needs services and resources, including SNAP direct outreach.
